We are delighted to introduce our new Head of Art, photographer and artist Fagner Alves, who joined ELSS us at the start of this academic year. We invited Mr Alves to tell us a little about his background and what pupils have been learning so far this year.
“This year, pupils of the lower school have been learning about the formal elements of art and the principles of design in the context of specific art movements and artist practices. They have learned about line in the work of Michael Craig-Martin, shapes and form in the work of Picasso and about colour in Fauvism. They have also learned about natural forms, mixed media and printmaking. Learning about how different artists have explored the formal elements of art across different periods in history has really inspired students; the results are excellent!
I discovered photography as an art form whilst undertaking my Bachelors Degree in Media Studies in Brazil, where I am originally from. I then moved to London and undertook a Postgraduate Course in Photography at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, the same institution where I obtained my Masters Degree in Fine Art. I am currently completing my practice-based PhD research in the department of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.
Outside school, I am an art practitioner. My art practice consists of drawing, moving image and photography. I take part in exhibitions and I really enjoy visiting art galleries. My first solo exhibition took place in London last year, where I had the chance to exhibit the artworks I have created during my doctoral research. I also enjoy playing the piano in my downtime.”
